Made to order – there is no stock catalogue. Each part is produced to your drawing, and production starts after drawing review and first-article approval.
A torx button head security bolt is a bolt with a low button head, a Torx recess that has a pin standing in its centre, and a stepped shank with a partial thread. The pin is the security feature: a standard Torx bit cannot seat, so the bolt can only be turned with a matching security driver.
Torx with a centre pin. The six-lobe recess takes torque well, and the pin in the middle blocks an ordinary T-bit. On a torx button head security bolt the recess and the pin are formed together, and the pin height has to leave the driver room to engage without touching the pin during rotation.
Button head and step. The button head sits low and carries the recess; below it the body is larger than the thread, forming a shoulder that locates the bolt in its bore. The thread then engages only at the far end, so the bolt works as a stepped fastener rather than a plain cap screw.
316 stainless, plain. The 316 grade is chosen where the bolt sits outdoors or on public equipment and sees chlorides. It is supplied passivated and plain, with no plating to fill the recess or change the fit of the security driver.
Together these decide what the bolt does on site: it closes a panel that should not be opened with a pocket tool, it locates in its bore, and it does not rust on a unit that stands outside.
The centre pin is what makes this a security bolt rather than a Torx bolt. It is formed in the middle of the six-lobe recess, and its height is set so the security driver’s tube clears it while the lobes still engage. A pin that is too tall stops the driver seating; one that is too short lets a standard bit bite.
The recess itself is cut with the head, so the lobes and the pin stay on the shank axis. On a torx button head security bolt that matters because the bolt is often set with a torque driver at arm’s length; a recess that is off centre makes the driver cock over and wear the lobes.
Below the head, the stepped body locates the bolt. The body diameter is larger than the thread and is held to the bore in the panel, while the shoulder under the head seats against the part. The thread at the far end is partial, so it engages only after the body has located.
Torx button head security bolts are quoted from M3 to M10 and up to 100 mm, with length usually held to +/-0.1 mm on the drawing. Where a long version is required, custom lengths up to 2,000 mm are subject to DFM review after drawing submission.
| Item | How it is defined | What we control |
|---|---|---|
| Total length | From the top of the button head to the tip | Datum stated on the drawing; length measured on the shop plate |
| Head diameter and height | The button head that carries the recess | Head diameter and height held to the drawing |
| Body and shoulder | The step that locates the bolt in the bore | Body diameter and shoulder position checked on the first article |
| Torx size and pin | The recess and its centre pin | Recess checked with the security driver after finishing |
| Thread size and length | The partial thread at the tip | Thread gauged per batch |
Each diameter and length combination is checked against the drawing before a quotation is issued. On a security bolt the driver is part of the joint, so the Torx size and the pin are reviewed together with the panel and the torque, not as a separate detail.
Length is measured from the top of the head, and the shoulder position is read from the same datum. Head height, body diameter and recess are gauged on the first article, and the recess is checked again with the security driver after passivation.
For a torx button head security bolt the drawing fixes six things: thread size and pitch, thread length, body diameter, shoulder position, total length and its datum, and the Torx size with pin. A seventh line matters on the drawing: the security driver the customer will use, because the tool has to clear the pin.
| Parameter | Why it matters on a security bolt | What we control |
|---|---|---|
| Thread start position | It sets how much body runs before the thread bites | Start dimension checked on the first article |
| Body diameter | It locates the bolt in the bore | Body diameter held to the bore on the drawing |
| Pin height | Too tall stops the driver; too short lets a standard bit bite | Pin checked with the security driver |
| Driver type | A standard T-bit will not turn the bolt | Recess and pin matched to the specified driver |
A 316 torx button head security bolt is supplied plain and passivated. The passivation removes free iron from machining and thread rolling and restores the chromium oxide film, which is what gives 316 its resistance in chloride atmospheres. No plating is added, so the recess and the pin keep the dimensions they were made to.
| Finish | How it protects | Effect on recess and pin | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passivated 316 stainless | Free iron removed, passive film restored | No dimensional change | Outdoor and public equipment |
| Electropolished 316 | Surface levelled, chromium enriched | Pin and lobes smoothed; driver checked after | Visible public hardware |
| Black oxide (carbon steel) | Conversion coating, minimal thickness | No measurable build-up | Indoor security covers |
| Zinc-nickel (carbon steel) | Zinc alloy coating | Build-up in the recess; driver checked after | Damp service on lower-cost parts |
| Dacromet flake (carbon steel) | Zinc-aluminium flake layer | Thin film; recess checked over the coating | Outdoor carbon steel assemblies |
Salt-spray exposure is agreed per project and written on the drawing; stainless parts are checked for passivation and cleanliness, and coated parts are tested in the condition they ship. On a security bolt the recess is re-checked with the driver after finishing, because a coating that fills the recess locks out the tool.
Packing protects the head and the pin. Bolts are packed in layers with the heads up so the recess is not nicked, and the label carries the batch and material heat.
Three places where a torx button head security bolt keeps public-facing hardware closed with a specific driver, and what it has to do instead:
EV charging and street furniture
|
EV charging – service covers held with a security driver |
Access control and intercom housings
|
Access control – housings that resist casual opening |
Kiosks, vending and payment terminals
|
Kiosks – tamper-resistant panel fixings |
Four reasons that matter specifically on a torx button head security bolt, each tied to what the drawing has to prove:
|
Engineering review before the bar is cut
Head height, pin height, step position and driver size are settled before the first bar is cut, so the first sample is measured against the drawing and the tool. Basis: Drawing and driver reviewed before machining starts. |
Turned one-piece with the recess on centre
The head, security recess and stepped shank are produced on one turning route, so the pin and lobes stay on the axis of the shank and the bolt locates as drawn. Basis: One-piece turning route, recess cut with the head. |
|
Recess checked with the security driver
The recess and pin are checked with the driver the customer will use, so the tool clears the pin and the lobes engage at torque. Basis: Recess and pin gauged with the security driver. |
First article to repeat production
The first article fixes the drawing revision, material heat, set-up and driver reference; repeat orders are compared against that record. Basis: First article signed off before the batch is released. |
These torx button head security bolts are turned from 316 stainless bar. The bar is checked against its certificate, the button head and stepped shank are turned, the security recess and pin are cut, the thread is produced at the tip, and the parts are deburred and passivated. The first part of every run is checked against the drawing and the security driver.
Material checked before the bar is cut |
Threads gauged after passivation |
Between runs the lathe is set to the drawing head and step dimensions; the first part goes to the gauges before the run continues, and the setting is recorded. Passivated parts are checked again with the security driver, so the record covers both the machined and the finished condition.
What decides whether the bolt passes is not its appearance: it is the pin clearing the driver, the lobes taking torque, the step locating in the bore, and the thread matching the tapped part. The inspection agreement covers those, and the criteria are the ones written on the drawing.
Thread gauging against GO/NO-GO gauges |
Head, pin and step profile on the projector |
Hardness testing where the drawing requires it |
Salt-spray testing where a coating is specified |
Each batch is recorded against the drawing revision: head, step and pin from the first article, the recess checked with the security driver, and the thread gauged per batch. If a gauge or the driver check fails, the parts back to the last good setting are held and re-checked.
Where a third-party report is required for the material or the passivation, it is listed on the drawing so the paperwork ships with the parts, and the batch number on the label matches the record used for the gauge.
Every torx button head security bolt shipment is traceable to the bar it was made from. The grade, heat number and standard are recorded on the material certificate supplied with the parts, and the inspection records follow the criteria agreed on the drawing.

With each batch we supply the material certificate, the inspection record for the criteria on the drawing and, where it is listed, the third-party report for the material. The documents carry the drawing revision and the batch number, so the paperwork can be matched to the parts.
More than 8,678 customers in 89 countries and regions have ordered from Shi Shi Tong; 87% of orders come from repeat customers and 56% through referrals. Most projects follow the same route: drawing review, first-article approval, then batches checked against that sample. Security parts are approved with the driver that will be used in service, so the sample and the tool are signed off together. Buyers visit during the process to review samples and to see the turning and passivation steps their parts will go through.

It is a bolt with a low button head, a Torx recess with a pin in its centre, and a stepped shank with a partial thread. The pin stops a standard Torx bit from seating, so the bolt needs the matching security driver.
It is the access control. Without the pin the bolt is a normal Torx fastener that any technician can open with a standard bit; with the pin, only the matching driver engages.
The body below the head is larger than the thread and locates the bolt in the panel bore, while the shoulder seats against the part. The thread at the tip engages after the body has located.
Torx button head security bolts are quoted from M3 to M10 and up to 100 mm, usually held to +/-0.1 mm. Where a long version is required, custom lengths up to 2,000 mm are subject to DFM review after drawing submission.
316 resists chlorides, so it is chosen for outdoor and public equipment. It is supplied passivated, which removes free iron and restores the passive film without adding a coating to the recess.
