Made to order – there is no stock catalogue. Each part is produced to your drawing, and production starts after drawing review and first-article approval.
A straight slot screw is a screw with a single flat slot across the head, turned with a flat driver. This one is an ultra-low head version with a small integral flange: the head sits almost flat on the panel, the flange spreads the load, and the slot is only deep enough to take a driver without raising the head height.
Ultra-low head with a flange. The head is a thin disc with a raised rim, and the flange under it acts as a built-in washer face. On a straight slot screw that matters because the low head leaves little material for the slot, and the flange is what keeps the bearing area wide enough for a thin panel.
Single slot. One slot, one driver. The slot is cut across the full head diameter, so a flat driver seats along its length and the head can be turned from any angle. The trade-off is that a slot carries less torque than a cross or a socket, so the joint is designed for the torque a slot can take.
Hole in the tail. This part has a hole drilled into the threaded tail, blind or through according to the drawing. The hole is a feature of the joint — a locking wire, a vent, or an assembly aid — and it is dimensioned with the thread so the wall between them stays sound.
Together these decide whether the part works: it sits flat, it takes a flat driver, and the tail hole does its job without weakening the thread.
The head on a straight slot screw of this type is kept low, and the flange is what carries the load. Head height and flange diameter are formed together in the die: if the head is thinner, the slot gets shallower; if the flange is smaller, the panel bears on a narrower ring.
The slot is cut across the head at full width. Its depth is the critical dimension on a low head — too shallow and the driver slips out, too deep and the head splits or the slot breaks through into the head seat. The slot is checked with the flat driver that will be used.
The tail hole is drilled after forming, from the thread end. On a through hole the drill breaks into the thread root at the tip; on a blind hole it stops short. Both are dimensioned with the thread so the wall between the hole and the flank is not thinned, and the hole is checked for position and depth on the first article.
Straight slot screws of this type are quoted from M2 to M8 and up to 100 mm, with length measured from the head face to the tip. Where a long version is required, custom lengths up to 2,000 mm are subject to DFM review after drawing submission.
| Item | How it is defined | What we control |
|---|---|---|
| Total length | From the head face to the tip | Datum stated on the drawing; length measured on the shop plate |
| Head height and flange | The low head and the integral flange diameter | Head height and flange checked on the first article |
| Slot width and depth | The flat-driver recess across the head | Checked with the matching flat driver |
| Thread size and length | Full machine thread to the head, per drawing | Thread gauged per batch |
| Tail hole | Diameter, depth and blind or through | Checked on the projector and with a pin gauge |
Each diameter and length combination is checked against the drawing before a quotation is issued. On a part with a tail hole the drill and the thread are reviewed together, because a hole that is too large or too deep leaves too little wall in the thread.
Length and the tail-hole depth are measured from opposite ends and recorded against the same drawing; the head height and slot are checked on the first article before the batch continues.
For a straight slot screw the drawing fixes the thread, the head and the tail hole: thread size and class, thread length, head diameter, height and flange, slot width and depth, and the tail hole diameter, depth and whether it is blind or through. The three groups are checked together because they are formed and drilled in one route, and a change to any one of them can move the others.
| Parameter | Why it matters on this screw | What we control |
|---|---|---|
| Slot width and depth | A shallow slot slips; a deep slot splits a low head | Checked with the matching flat driver |
| Head and flange | The flange is the bearing face | Diameter and height checked on the first article |
| Thread class | The thread is full length to the head | Gauged per batch |
| Tail hole | It must not thin the thread wall | Position and depth checked with a pin gauge |
This screw is supplied in 316 stainless, plain and passivated. The 316 grade is chosen where the part sees chlorides or washdown, and passivation removes the free iron left by machining and drilling so the tail hole and the thread do not become the first corrosion points.
| Finish | How it protects | Effect on slot and thread | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passivated 316 | Free iron removed, passive film restored | No dimensional change | Stainless parts in damp or chloride service |
| Electropolished 316 | Surface levelled, chromium enriched | Slot edges smoothed; driver re-checked | Hygienic and visible parts |
| Black oxide (carbon steel) | Conversion coating, minimal thickness | No measurable build-up | Indoor parts where black is required |
| Zinc plated (carbon steel) | Sacrificial zinc layer | Build-up in the slot; driver checked after | Carbon steel equivalents |
| Dacromet flake (carbon steel) | Zinc-aluminium flake layer | Thin film; slot checked over coating | Outdoor carbon steel parts |
Salt-spray exposure is agreed per project and written on the drawing. On a slotted screw the slot is re-checked with the driver after finishing, because a coating that fills it stops the flat driver seating.
Packing protects the low head and the tail hole. Parts are packed so the flanges do not rub and the hole is not blocked by debris, and the label carries the batch and the material heat.
Three assemblies where a straight slot screw with a low head and a tail hole is chosen for the joint, and what the screw has to do instead:
| Where it sits | The screw closes a cover or fixes a bracket where the head has to sit flat and the slot has to be usable with a flat driver. |
| When it goes wrong | A head that stands proud fouls a neighbouring part, and a slot that rounds out stops the cover coming off. |
| Why it happens | The space is tight, the panel is thin, and the hardware is serviced with a flat driver. |
| What we control | Head height and flange checked, slot checked with the driver, and the thread gauged per batch. |
| Where it sits | The screw plugs or fixes a component in a fluid or gas path, and the tail hole is part of the passage or a vent. |
| When it goes wrong | A hole that is blocked or wrongly placed changes the flow, and a thread that is thinned by the hole leaks. |
| Why it happens | The part is small, the hole is drilled after forming, and the joint is pressure-tested. |
| What we control | Hole diameter and depth checked with a pin gauge, and the thread wall verified on the first article. |
| Where it sits | The screw is locked with wire through the tail hole, so the hole has to take the wire and the head has to stay low. |
| When it goes wrong | A hole that is too small will not pass the wire, and a head that stands proud is a snag point. |
| Why it happens | The assembly is safety-critical, the wire is fitted by hand, and the screw is not re-used. |
| What we control | Hole size and position checked, head height held, and the slot checked with the flat driver. |
Four reasons that matter on a straight slot screw with a tail hole, each tied to what the drawing has to prove:
|
Head, slot and hole reviewed together
The low head, the slot depth and the tail hole are reviewed together before tooling, so a screw that would split at the slot or thin its thread wall is raised first. Basis: Drawing reviewed as one part, not feature by feature. |
Formed head, drilled tail
The head and flange are formed in the die, the thread is produced, and the tail hole is drilled in a controlled step so the thread wall stays sound. Basis: Forming and drilling planned as one route. |
|
Slot, head and hole measured
The slot is checked with the flat driver, the head and flange on the projector, and the hole with a pin gauge, so the part that assembles is the part that was approved. Basis: Slot, head and hole checked on the first article. |
First article to repeat production
The first article fixes the drawing revision, material heat, die set and drill position; repeat orders are compared against that record. Basis: First article signed off before the batch is released. |
Shi Shi Tong forms these straight slot screws on a multi-station header: the ultra-low head and flange are formed in the die, the slot is cut with the head, the thread is produced, and the tail hole is drilled in a controlled step. The first part of every run is checked for head height, slot and hole before the batch continues.

|
|
Between runs the die insert is changed to the drawing head and flange dimensions, and the drill position is set for the tail hole; the first parts go to the gauges before the run continues, and the setting is recorded.
What decides whether a straight slot screw passes is not its finish: it is the head height and flange, the slot taking the flat driver, the thread class and the tail hole in the right place and depth. The inspection agreement covers those, and the criteria come from the drawing.
Thread gauging against GO/NO-GO gauges |
Head, flange and slot profile on the projector |
Hardness testing where the drawing requires it |
Salt-spray testing of the finished part |
Each batch is recorded against the drawing revision: head and slot from the first article, the hole checked with a pin gauge, and the thread gauged per batch. If a gauge or the hole check fails, the parts back to the last good setting are held and re-checked.
Where the drawing asks for a third-party report, it is ordered alongside the batch and filed with the inspection record under one batch number.
Every straight slot screw shipment is traceable to the wire it was made from. The grade, heat number and standard are recorded on the material certificate supplied with the parts, and the inspection records follow the criteria agreed on the drawing.

With each batch we supply the material certificate, the inspection record for the criteria on the drawing and, where it is listed, the third-party report for the material or the finish. The documents carry the drawing revision and the batch number, so the paperwork can be matched to the parts.
More than 8,678 customers in 89 countries and regions have ordered from Shi Shi Tong; 87% of orders come from repeat customers and 56% through referrals. Most projects follow the same route: drawing review, first-article approval, then batches checked against that sample. Slotted parts are approved with the driver that will turn them, so the tool and the sample are signed off together. Buyers visit during the process to review samples and to see how the heads, slots and tail holes are formed.

It is a screw with a single flat slot across the head, turned with a flat driver. This version has an ultra-low head with a small flange, so it sits almost flat and still spreads the load.
The head has to stay out of the way in a tight assembly. The flange under the head keeps the bearing area wide enough, so a low head does not mean a narrow contact ring.
It is a joint feature: a locking wire, a vent or an assembly aid, depending on the drawing. It is drilled after forming and checked so the thread wall stays sound.
Straight slot screws are quoted from M2 to M8 and up to 100 mm, measured from the head face. Where a long version is required, custom lengths up to 2,000 mm are subject to DFM review after drawing submission.
316 resists chlorides and washdown, and it is supplied passivated so the slot and the tail hole do not become the first corrosion points.
