Made to order – there is no stock catalogue. Each part is produced to your drawing, and production starts after drawing review and first-article approval.
A slotted head cap screw is a small screw with a cylindrical cap head and a single straight slot across the top, turned with a flat driver. In the micro sizes this page covers, the head is only a couple of millimetres across and the slot is measured in tenths, so the screw is turned rather than headed and the slot is cut as part of the same route.
Cap head at micro size. The cylindrical head gives a taller driving face than a tiny pan or cheese head, which matters when the slot is only a fraction of a millimetre wide. The flat top also carries a decorative finish evenly, which is why these screws are often visible.
Single slot. One straight slot, one flat driver. The slot is cut across the full head diameter so the driver can engage from any angle. At micro sizes the slot depth is the critical dimension: too shallow and the driver slips, too deep and the head splits or the slot breaks into the thread side.
Gold plating. The gold layer is decorative and corrosion-resistant, and it is applied after the slot is cut. On a tiny screw the plating thickness is a meaningful fraction of the slot and thread, so the part is gauged after plating, in the condition the customer uses.
Together these decide whether the part works: the slot takes the driver, the head sits flat on a tiny bearing area, and the finish survives handling.
The head on a micro slotted cap screw is turned to a small diameter with a flat top, and the slot is cut into that top. Head diameter and slot width are dimensioned together, because the pillar of material on either side of the slot has to survive the driver torque at a head size that leaves very little to spare.
The thread runs to the head on most of these parts, so the shank is short and the screw is used in thin assemblies. Where a plain shank is specified it is turned with the rest of the body, and the thread start is read from the head datum.
On a slotted head cap screw this matters more than on a larger part: because it is turned, the head, the slot and the thread are produced on one axis. That is what keeps a 2 mm head sitting flat and a short thread starting where the drawing says, instead of being formed in a die that cannot hold a slot this small.
Slotted head cap screws of this type are quoted from M1.2 to M3 and in short lengths, with the slot and head measured on a projector rather than with hand tools. Where a longer version is required, custom lengths up to 2,000 mm are subject to DFM review after drawing submission.
| Item | How it is defined | What we control |
|---|---|---|
| Total length | From the top of the head to the tip | Datum stated on the drawing; measured on the projector |
| Head diameter and height | The micro cap head | Checked on the projector on the first article |
| Slot width and depth | The flat-driver recess | Checked with the matching flat driver |
| Thread size and length | Machine thread to the drawing | Gauged with small GO/NO-GO gauges |
| Plating thickness | Gold layer per drawing | Checked after plating; slot and thread re-gauged |
Each size is checked against the drawing before a quotation is issued. The driver is part of the check: at this scale a flat driver one size up will round the slot, so the drawing states the blade width and the slot is checked with that blade.
Head height and slot depth are measured from the same face, and the plating is checked after the slot is cut. The first article is measured on every dimension before the batch continues.
For a slotted head cap screw the drawing fixes the thread, the slot and the head: thread size and class, thread length, head diameter and height, slot width and depth. On a plated part it also fixes the condition in which the slot and the thread are gauged. Those items are checked together, because a slot that fits before plating may not take the driver after it.
| Parameter | Why it matters on a micro screw | What we control |
|---|---|---|
| Slot width | A driver too wide rounds the slot | Cut to the blade width and checked with it |
| Slot depth | Too deep breaks into the head | Checked on the projector |
| Thread class | Plating changes a small thread by a few microns | Gauged after plating |
| Head height | It has to stay low and still hold the slot | Checked on the first article |
Gold plating on a carbon steel screw is a thin decorative and corrosion-resistant layer. It is applied after the slot is cut and the thread is produced, so the slot and the thread are slightly smaller than they were machined; on a micro screw those few microns matter, and the part is gauged in the plated condition.
| Finish | How it protects | Effect on slot and thread | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold plated | Thin noble layer, decorative | Builds on slot and thread; gauged after plating | Visible micro screws in instruments |
| Nickel plated | Hard decorative layer | Thin build-up; slot checked after | General micro hardware |
| Black oxide | Conversion coating, minimal thickness | No measurable build-up | Dark micro assemblies |
| Passivated stainless | Free iron removed, film restored | No dimensional change | Stainless micro screws |
| Plain carbon steel | Oil film only | No dimensional change | Internal parts not exposed to moisture |
For a slotted head cap screw, salt-spray exposure is agreed per project and written on the drawing. On a gold-plated micro screw the plating is checked for coverage in the slot, because a thin spot there is where corrosion starts and where the driver seats.
Packing protects the tiny heads. Screws are packed in trays or counted bags so the slots are not nicked, and the label carries the batch and the plating run.
Three assemblies where a micro slotted head cap screw is chosen for its size and its finish, and what the screw has to do instead:
| Where it sits | The screw holds a hinge or a lens frame where the head is visible and the space is a few millimetres. |
| When it goes wrong | A slot that rounds out stops the hinge being adjusted, and a head that stands proud catches on a case. |
| Why it happens | The parts are tiny, the finish is decorative, and the screw is adjusted by hand. |
| What we control | Slot checked with the flat driver, head height held, and the gold layer checked for coverage. |
| Where it sits | The screw closes a case or fixes a bracket where the head is visible and the thread is short. |
| When it goes wrong | A slot that is too shallow slips, and plating that closes the slot stops the driver seating. |
| Why it happens | The case is thin, the parts are handled, and the screw is removed for service. |
| What we control | Slot gauged after plating, thread checked with small gauges, and packing that protects the heads. |
| Where it sits | The screw fixes a small bracket or a cover where the head sits in a recess and the slot has to be reachable. |
| When it goes wrong | A head that is not flat tilts the bracket, and a slot that is off centre walks the driver. |
| Why it happens | The assembly is precise, the parts are small, and the hardware is visible. |
| What we control | Head flatness and slot position checked on the projector, and the thread gauged after plating. |
Four reasons that matter on a micro slotted head cap screw, each tied to what the drawing has to prove:
|
Slot and driver reviewed first
The slot width, head height and driver are reviewed before the bar is cut, so a slot that would round or split is raised before the first part is made. Basis: Drawing and driver reviewed before production. |
Turned, so the slot can be cut small
The head, slot and thread are turned on one axis, which holds a slot only a fraction of a millimetre wide that a die could not form. Basis: Turning route for micro slots and heads. |
|
Measured on the projector, after plating
Head, slot and thread are measured on the projector and with small gauges in the plated condition, so the part that arrives can be driven. Basis: Measured after plating, on the projector. |
First article to repeat production
The first article fixes the drawing revision, material heat, set-up and plating batch; repeat orders are compared against that record. Basis: First article signed off before the batch is released. |
Shi Shi Tong turns these micro screws from carbon steel bar: the cap head and the slot are turned and cut, the thread is produced, and the parts are deburred, gold plated and gauged. The first part of every run is measured on the projector for head height, slot and thread before the batch continues.
Bar checked before the bar is cut |
Threads gauged after plating |
Between runs the lathe is set to the drawing head and slot dimensions; the first part goes to the gauges before the run continues, and the setting is recorded. Plated parts are checked again after the plating line, and the parts are packed in trays so the slots are not damaged.
What decides whether a slotted head cap screw passes is not its colour: it is the head diameter and height, the slot width and depth, the thread class in the plated condition, and the plating coverage. The inspection agreement covers those, and the criteria come from the drawing.
Thread gauging after plating |
Head and slot profile on the projector |
Hardness testing where the drawing requires it |
Salt-spray testing of the plated finish |
Each batch is recorded against the drawing revision: head and slot from the first article, the thread gauged after plating, and the plating checked for coverage. If a gauge or the slot check fails, the parts back to the last good setting are held and re-checked.
Where a third-party report is required for the material or the plating, it is listed on the drawing so the paperwork ships with the parts, and the batch number on the label matches the record used for inspection.
Every slotted head cap screw shipment is traceable to the bar it was made from. The grade, heat number and standard are recorded on the material certificate supplied with the parts, and the inspection records follow the criteria agreed on the drawing.

With each batch we supply the material certificate, the inspection record for the criteria on the drawing and, where it is listed, the third-party report for the material or the plating. The documents carry the drawing revision and the batch number, so the paperwork can be matched to the parts.
More than 8,678 customers in 89 countries and regions have ordered from Shi Shi Tong; 87% of orders come from repeat customers and 56% through referrals. Most projects follow the same route: drawing review, first-article approval, then batches checked against that sample. Micro parts are approved with the driver blade that will be used, so the slot and the tool are signed off together. Buyers visit during the process to review samples and to see how the micro heads and slots are turned and plated.

It is a small screw with a cylindrical cap head and a single straight slot across the top, turned with a flat driver. In micro sizes the head is only a couple of millimetres across and the slot is a fraction of a millimetre wide.
A slot this small cannot be formed reliably in a die. Turning the head and cutting the slot on the same axis holds the width and depth the drawing asks for.
A gold layer of a few microns is a large fraction of a micro slot and thread. The part is gauged after plating, so the driver and the mating thread still fit.
Slotted head cap screws are quoted from M1.2 to M3 and in short lengths. Where a longer version is required, custom lengths up to 2,000 mm are subject to DFM review after drawing submission.
The plating is specified on the drawing and checked against an accepted sample; a decorative gold layer is matched visually because its tone shifts with thickness and substrate.
